VEIL OF GOLD — STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH

Veil of Gold was photographed in Glacier National Park as a winter storm moved across the mountains at sunset. I was there leading a photography workshop when the weather shifted quickly, snow showers began to sweep through the peaks, and a narrow opening in the clouds allowed the last light of day to pour through. The setting sun ignited the falling snow, turning the storm into something luminous, as golden light filtered through shadow and weather at the same time.

What draws me to moments like this is the tension between exposure and protection. The mountains feel vast and untamed, the storm unpredictable, yet there is a quiet sense of shelter within the scene. The falling snow acts as a veil, not obscuring the land, but wrapping it, softening its edges, and revealing a deeper stillness beneath the force of the storm. The light does not conquer the darkness here, it coexists with it, creating a moment that feels both powerful and intimate.

I am drawn to photographing landscapes from within weather events rather than waiting for ideal conditions. Snow, rain, fog, and wind become part of the composition, shaping the image in ways that clear skies never can. Standing there as the storm passed through the mountains, watching snow illuminated by the final light of day, the experience felt less like witnessing a spectacle and more like being allowed into a moment of quiet protection within something wild.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.’” Psalm 1:1-2

PRINT PROCESS AND AVAILABILITY

Veil of Gold is offered exclusively as a dye infused metal photographic panel. This process permanently infuses the image into architectural grade aluminum, allowing light, color, and detail to become part of the metal surface itself rather than resting on top of it. The result is exceptional depth, luminosity, and dimensional presence, qualities that complement the illuminated snowfall and layered mountain forms captured in this Glacier National Park landscape photograph. Dye infused metal was selected for its durability, archival stability, and ability to respond dynamically to ambient light. When viewed in person, the panel enhances the contrast between shadow and warmth, preserving the glowing snowfall and atmospheric conditions that define this moment in the wilderness. This work is available as a limited edition of twelve. Each panel is signed and numbered by the artist and released sequentially.
