story behind the photo
I photographed The Quickening in Central Texas during my film years, using motion as a way to create energy, emotion, and life rather than relying on sharp detail alone. This image came from hours of watching deer move across open pasture, waiting for the moment when speed, direction, and timing aligned. By using a slower shutter speed and tracking the lead deer as it ran, the background dissolves into motion while the animal remains just defined enough to feel alive and alert. What interests me most in wildlife photography is not simply what an animal looks like, but how it moves through the world, guided by instinct and awareness. In this photograph, the blur becomes the language of urgency and presence, a visual expression of readiness, vulnerability, and the sudden rush that comes when nature decides it is time to move. Motion, for me, has always been a way to give photographs life, and this image captures that quickening moment when everything shifts and the heart responds before the mind has time to catch up.
“The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.”
Habakkuk 3:19 (NIV)
