A Mother’s Radius

Red fox moving in motion in the mountains of Colorado, maternal behavior, wildlife photograph

story behind the photo

I photographed A Mother’s Radius during a hike in the mountains of Colorado, working on film and moving quietly through the landscape when a red fox suddenly appeared and began running wide, deliberate circles around me. For nearly thirty minutes, she never stopped moving, never approached directly, and never left my field of view. I stood there photographing as she ran, sensing intention without yet understanding it. Eventually, it became clear that her movement was not random, she was creating distance. When I carefully stepped back toward the area she had come from, I discovered her young hidden nearby, and every pass she made had been an effort to draw my attention away from them. This image captures that moment of realization, when motion becomes meaning. The blur is not about speed alone, it is about purpose. She was not fleeing, she was guarding, drawing a boundary with her own body, defining a radius of protection. Shot on film, this photograph represents one of the most profound expressions of motherhood I have witnessed in the wild, instinctive, selfless, and fiercely attentive.

“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.”
Isaiah 66:13
